Reserves Make Their Point Despite Red Mist

by Jeff King (with help from Colin Wotherspoon)

Wearside League Division 1 - Saturday 6th October 2024

Newton Aycliffe YFC Senior 2 v 2 Chester-le-Street United Reserves

United's reserves travelled down the A19 to take on Newton Aycliffe YFC Senior a side that were second bottom of the table. Chester no doubt looking for maximum points to keep in touch with the Club's at the top.

In the end the point they earned was as much as they deserved and perhaps showed what could have been had circumstances not been against them. Goals from Dan Walton and Evan Cubby giving United a hard-earned point.

The score line though barely begins to tell the story of a game where United had three players, goalkeeper Rylie Irwin, midfielder Matty Henderson and substitute Jonathan Beattie all red carded by the referee for picking up two cautions and Casper Skrzecz being sin-binned.

Along with the players, Head Coach Colin Wotherspoon was also dismissed from the dugout by the referee making it a less than memorable day all round for United's second string.

However, gaining a point under such circumstances has to be a big positive given the issues and incidents that occurred. A point that keeps United in the top 5 with 21 points from 12 games.

Their record of 6 winds 3 draws and 3 losses for 21 points with 41 goals scored and 24 conceded is a very creditable one for a young set of players that are often playing against sides that include very experienced senior players.
