Reserves Moving On Up After Thumping Home Win

by Jeff King (Thanks to Colin Wotherspoon)

Wearside League Division 1 - Saturday 28th September 2024

Chester-le-Street United Reserves 4 v 0 New Durham AFC

After goals from Harvey Lawrence and Leo Fasuan had earned United's reserves a 2 - 2 draw with Gateshead Leam Rangers Reserves seven days earlier The Reserves were back at home looking to get back to winning ways.

On Saturday United's reserve team were at home against New Durham AFC. The match was changed to the 3G pitch at The Riverside with all the rain that had fallen this week United wanted to keep the Centre (grass) pitch fresh.

This was because United have a big game this Wednesday's FA Youth Cup game against Spennymoor Town. To be fair though the 3G surface suits the way United want to move the ball and control possession.

The lads started the game like they fancied it and went 1 - 0 up through another goal from top scorer Harvey Lawrence. United then controlling the whole of the first half with majority of possession.

But they just could not find that final pass to open a stubborn Durham defence to get a second goal and had to be content with a one-goal cushion at the half.

The dressing room chat from Coaches Colin Wotherspoon and Willie Donachie asked the group to be more creative second half with their movement off the ball and still be patient in possession.

To be fair the lads more than answered the call doing very well indeed and scoring 3 more goals through Leo Fasuan, Kymani Severin and an great top corner finish from Jack Wilson.

Wotherspoon's top performers on the day were Dylan Robson, Keane Mitchell and Harvey Lawrence but gave the Man of the Match award to Matthew Henderson.

But Henderson got his final vote as he was involved in most of United's good possession play today from the middle of the park.

An excellent win for The Reserves moving them up to 5th in the table and making it three wins from three games for the Chester-le-Street 'senior' sides as they continue to progress and show the worth of this exciting project.
