Reserves Show Resilience As Well As Great Quality In Superb Away Win

by Jeff King (With thanks to Anth Johnson)

Wearside League Division 1 - Saturday 26th October 2024

Deerness Valley FC 3 v 5 Chester-le-Street United Reserves

No Colin Wotherspoon on the side-lines for this one as he was unwell. Anth Johnson stepping up to help out 'World Cup' Willie Donachie to coach the lads. The victory being exactly the sort of tonic their Head Coach needed to aid his recovery.

This was a gritty performance from the Reserves in a physical encounter where the whole team stood up and passed the test with flying colours against good opposition especially after going down to 10 men on 55 minutes at 3 - 2 down.

Rylie Irwin made great save from point blank range on 3 minutes as the home side had a couple of early chances.

Chester grew into the game and saw more of the ball for the first 20 minutes and went ahead as a long ball into the box from Harvey Lawrence fell into the path of Jude Anderson who calmly fired to the right of the keeper from close range.

Deerness got back into the game five mins later with an unstoppable strike from 30 yards into the top corner.

On 25 minutes a ball into the far post was guided by Anderson into the path of substitute Joe Guest on for Leo Fasuan who coolly finished from 5 yards to give United a 1 - 2 lead at Half-Time.

The home side equalised early in the second half as their Centre Back lost his marker from a set piece and his looping volley found its way over the keeper. United were hit by a further blow on 55 mins with Kymani Severin seeing red for an adjudged late tackle.

Two minutes later and down to 10 men United went behind after a looping cross was parried into the path of the forward whose shot found its way through our defenders into an empty net.

Anderson equalised as he rounded the advancing keeper after a great diagonal run in behind and showed great composure to tuck the ball in from the left side of the box.

With 15 mins remaining one of the home sides centre midfielders left the pitch after a second yellow card.

The CLS Utd lads looked the stronger in the last 10 mins playing 10 v 10 and deservedly took the lead on 83 mins as Anderson’s shot hit the post and was followed up by Lawrence to score from 2 yards.

The game was sealed on 89 mins as hard work from Evan Cubby who closed the defenders clearance down on the edge of the box allowing him to slot the ball behind the outstretched keeper to give United a two goal cushion.

A result that means United's youngsters sit 5th in a highly competitive senior men's league and once again showing their quality and the strength of the CLS Utd/Park View Academy projct.

Anth Johnson's Post Game Comments :

The boys showed unbelievable character and resilience today in a physical encounter on a heavy pitch to come from behind a man down to get the win.

Football wasn’t pretty at times but the lads got the job done.

Great team effort from all the group and a special mention to unsung hero’s Walton and Dixon that were also top performers alongside Anderson.
