Reserves Stretch Unbeaten Run To Four

by Jeff King (with a nod to Colin Wotherspoon)

Wearside League Division 1 - Saturday 31st August 2024

Shildon Railway 1 v 1 Chester-le-Street United Reserves

United's reserves took their unbeaten run to four games with a well earned point away at a strong Shildon side. At the end of another good all-round performance they felt that they were a little unlucky not to take all three points.

United went 1-0 up with a great left foot finish from Kymani Severin midway through the second half. However, Shildon were gifted an equaliser from the pitch.

A safe back pass from Joe Sykes saw keeper Louie Aldus go to kick it clear and it took a massive bobble over his foot and left the Shildon forward with an easy tap into an empty net.

United then had a glorious opportunity to go back in front when Evan Cubby missed a free header from barely 3 yards out Ten minutes from the end United had what they thought was a stone wall penalty turned away by the referee.

Matty Henderson's header was going into the awaiting net when it was stopped by the arm of the defender right in front of the referee but no penalty resulted.

Head Coach Colin Wotherspoon commented post game.

"Overall we defended well and had enough chances that we should of won the game. The luck and decisions were not on our side todat. But on the positive side that’s 10 points from a possible 12 since our last defeat so I've got to be happy with that."
