Richmond Mavericks 3 v 4 Chester-le-Street United Reserves
The opening league game of the season saw Chester travel to North Yorkshire to take on Richmond Mavericks at Richmond School. United's reserves finished 8th in last season's campaign and are looking to push on this time around.
Things didn't start well for the young Chester side as they struggled against more experienced and battle hardened opponents who took a 2 - 0 lead in the first half before Kymani Stewart pulled a goal back before the break.
The second half was a completely different story. Evan Cubby pulled United level from the penalty spot before goals from Harvey Lawrence and Jack Wilson turned a two-goal deficit into a two-goal advantage.
Richmond did pull one goal back but The Reserves stood fast and held on to record a superb win on the road. After the game Head Coach Colin Wotherspoon had this to say.
"The lads did brilliant second half. To come from 2 - 0 down to win 4 - 3 shows great character at any level. They got told at half-time that it was not good enough. Nothing to do with effort just being young and naïve."
"Second half there was more thought, care and energy. Plus a personnel change at half-time made an impact (Ben) Gallagher and (Evan) Cubby gave us more."
Next up for the youngsters is a trip to former Northern League side Willington AFC on Wednesday 7th August with a 7:30pm kick-off.
