Youngsters Slip To Defeat In Difficult Conditions

by Jeff King (With Thanks To Anth Johnson)

Durham County FA U-18s Saturday League - Saturday 21st December 2024

Whitby Town U-18s 1 v 0 Chester-le-Street United U-18s

The U-18’s were unlucky to not get something from today’s fixture away to Whitby Town as the hosts came out on top by the odd goal.

A blustery day on a heavy pitch where the conditions got the better of what turned out to be a fairly scrappy game with both defences being a feature.

Chester played with the wind behind them in first half but couldn’t take advantage with only a few half chances to note.

Overall the game was a bit of a battle and as often on some of these Winter grass pitches it was always going to be about who looked after the ball best and who came out on top in the physical battles.

Credit to United's lads who more than matched Whitby in both areas in this one.

United seemed to have more joy in the second half as the wind died down and they created a number of good opportunities especially from crosses out wide.

But it was one of those days where everything seemed to fall into the path of the opposition in and around the box or Chester just snatched at shots not getting clinical conviction with their goal scoring attempts.

The one and only goal which proved to be the winner was scored from a corner on 65 minutes as a looping header found its way over the line from the back post.

The CLS youngsters huffed and puffed last 15 mins but probably didn’t create  enough in the last third to justify getting anything from the match.

Anth Johnson commented after the game :

This was a really pleasing team effort especially defensively with all the lads putting an honest shift in.

Alex White and Brooklyn Moss doing a great job at centre back for the team having really solid games along with first and second half keepers Lambert and Reid who did well.

TEAM : 1. Lambert 2. Price 3. Hepworth 4. White 5. Moss 6. Young 7. Bell 8. Connelly

9. Beattie 10. Pye 11. Linsley 12. Ngoyi Wansay 13. Reid

MAN of the MATCH : Brooklyn Moss - Showed great versatility again playing in an unfamiliar CB position where he looked comfortable and composed.
